Many webmasters on the net will often display advertisement banners and links on their website in order to monetize and earn some extra income online. These advertisements are implemented for a number of few reasons: covering the cost of website hosting and domain registration, earning some extra income online to replace a part-time job, or earning some serious income as a full-time job. While there are many publishers’ pay-per-click (PPC) / cost-per-impressions (CPM) advertising solutions on the net, many webmaster will turn to Google Adsense. As we all know that Google is an industry giant when it comes to search engines and the web. They are currently positioned 2nd place according to Alexa.com for traffic ranking and popularity. I would have to say that Google is by far one of the most innovative technological companies in the world.

Why use Google Adsense?

Adsense has been around longer than many other advertising companies. They were the first to implement the concept of “contextual ads”. What’s contextual ads? This terminology means “relevant” or “on topic” advertisement display. Google has an “agent / robot” that crawls pages to index the context of a page so ad units will display the most relevant advertisements based on the topic and content of the individual page.

How Much Can I Earn?

Everyone that’s new to the Adsense program will often have this concern in mind. From my 5 years of experience with Adsense, I can honestly tell you that it differentiates from webmaster to webmaster. Some people can earn thousands within a month and majority will earn only a few dollars to a couple of hundreds. It’s important to keep in mind that the value of certain industries can also reflect the value of clicks and page impressions.

Recommended Practice

Abide by the Rules:
Many webmasters that sign up with Adsense never bother reading the Terms of Service (TOS) upon application acceptance. I strongly recommend you to read this in depth and absorb as much as you can. If you have any questions about the TOS, you can always contact an Adsense representative from Google by sending them a quick email. You don’t want to make the mistake of violating the TOS and risk getting banned from this “opportunity”. I’ve heard some horror stories from other webmasters on the web that have gained hundreds to thousands of dollars in a month and had their account banned and were unable to receive the money they had gained.

Ad Placement:
Blend your ad units with the same text/font scheme you use on your website. You can try a border however I’ve had better experience with not using one since it clearly shows a border around the, “Hey you! I’m a 300×250 advertisement!”. Using text links only can help to not reveal the page block as an advertisement. Don’t be over excessive on the ads either like lining up three 300×250 banners in a row. However it does work well with 2 vertically, depending on website width. One of the best areas to place an add link is right after your subject body or the main content of the page.

Remember!

  • Abiding by the Google Adsense TOS (Terms of Service). You will get banned if you violate it!
  • Don’t ever publicly announce how much you make and detailed statistics of your earnings from Adsense.
  • Don’t place images next to ad units that could mislead the user to increase clicks.
  • Never tell people to intentionally click on your ad units.
  • Make sure your website or blog includes a link to your privacy policy and terms of use.
  • Blended ad units will convert better especially when placed center left of the web page.
  • Don’t be over excessive on advertisement banners. Adsense units convert best in text form.
  • Never ever click on your own ads. This also means to not submit to those “traffic guaranteed” sites such as those traffic, website display sites. Get traffic the ethical way.
  • Once your banned, you are banned. Don’t even try to get your account back.
